New Horizons

Post  Jay on Thu May 07, 2009 12:14 pm

At some point in early 1997 Paul Robinson and I sat down and discussed a story idea set in the "Next Gen" era. We had an idea for an "X-Files" style investigation team that would be sent out to investigate the really weird things found by other crews. We had some great ideas - obviously, because word got out and suddenly what had started out as just the two of us, became a group of 50.

As ideas go, this one developed and we realised that our little crew would need a ship, and that ship would need a name. Call it an inspired choice because by July 1997 we had picked the name "Horizon."

The large number of people saw a large number of changes, and a lengthy list of characters was created as "crew" for the "USS Horizon." They ceased to be investigators (although we gave them the odd mystery to solve now and then) and instead became explorers.

Funny enough the large size of the group - or club as we finally agreed to call ourselves, realised early on that we had too many characters, and too many ideas for one ship. So in 1998 Frances Prestidge and I came up with the idea of splitting the crew up, and sending some of them off on another starship to deal with weird and wonderful investigations. There and then we decided to call it "Guardian."

Paul and I hammered out the details of how the split would work story wise, and how both role-plays would run under the Horizon banner, but I think Paul very much wanted to try something new, and so we agreed that the Horizon role-play would undergo some major changes as well. Firstly the remaining characters would end up on a new ship called "USS Cabal," and they would be true explorers, where as "Guardian" would be dealing with an ongoing mystery that threatened the very existence of the Federation. Now and then both "crews" would find themselves working together.

To this day we still are.

Whilst the RPG split into the two Groups that exist now, it was a painless split and a very fluid one, and it was only natural that Horizon should rename itself Cabal. That's evolution for you.

But several years on, it seems only natural that we should put all this under one banner, one roof if you will. We are basically playing the same universe that Gene Roddenberry created, and we still play in the "Horizon Universe" that we ourselves created. We left plenty of room for us to explore our own ideas, and to have our own type of fun.

Stories about the USS Horizon are still being written, albeit retroactively. A 3D model of that ship now exists, it's a shame that the model was built after we stopped using that ship - and some feel we should find an excuse to go back to using it (it is still a cool design, for a fan one). But the USS Horizon is a part of the past, and this is the future - well so to speak.

It's kind of fun to look back at our original crew and ship now and then, and dip into there past even as we tell the stories of there present, and future. Cameron Rease, Ixlanya Hoth, Li Romy, Isaac Whitlock and co are still very much alive and well for us, and will be for many more years to come.

We have no "recruitment policy," or for that matter "membership criteria," (other then you need to be online, and you need to be over 18 - this RPG is not for children and not being written for children). Enquires from people interested in joining in are always welcome, and you never know, we may say yes.

For the last few years things has been run out of the public arena, however we feel the time is right to go public again. In spite of rumour both Guardian & Cabal have continued and are still active to this date. 2009 seems an appropriate enough year for us to get back out into the public arena, and show the world what we have been doing.

What we do...

Suppose I should also add what we actually do...

For the most part, what we do is write fan fiction type stories based on our own characters and scenarios.

That, and have fun too.
